The Liberia Maritime Authority on Monday October 5, 2020 welcomed its new Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Eugene Lenn Nagbe following his appointment by President George Manneh Weah on October 1, 2020. Commissioner Nagbe replaces Dr. James F. Kollie who resigned after three years of service at the Authority.

Speaking at the welcome ceremony on behalf of the staff, Atty. Nya Gbaintor, Principal Director for Administration and Legal Affairs informed Commissioner Nagbe that he was inheriting a staff of competent technicians who are schooled in various fields of maritime. He stressed that the staff are ready to work with the Commissioner/CEO for the good of the Authority.

In her handing over remarks, the outgoing Officer-In-Charge, Cllr. Margaret Ansumana said her seven-month stay in charge of LiMA was a success because the leadership team handling the day-to-day affairs of the authority was always readily available to deliver even at the point of telecommuting.

She stated that a detailed handover note was presented to the new Commissioner to apprise him with things that have happened and areas that need attention.

“We put together a good reading material to give the new Commissioner a feel of where we are right now and where we intend to go. Commissioner Nagbe, you have our fullest support. You are taking over a team of able technicians and technocrats who are well versed in the maritime industry. Let me wish you clear skies and calm oceans as you steer the affairs of this institution,” Cllr. Ansumana said.

Receiving the mantle to steer the affairs of the Liberia Maritime Authority, Commissioner Eugene Lenn Nagbe said he has not come to “fix maritime because nothing is spoiled but I came to build on gains already made.”

“My style of leadership is to tab on the expertise of every member of the team, including the weaklings because a team is strong as its weakest link. You have been doing very well. My work is to push you a little harder to do more,” Commissioner Nagbe stated.

He emphasized that the Liberian maritime program is very important for the country despite the fact that the country slipped off its status as the second largest maritime program in the world.

“Why can’t we get back to the top? We can do that if we all work together to achieve it. I will provide the leadership but it is like a house without a foundation, it cannot be a strong house. I like for us to keep it simple but I also like for us to work very hard. In some way, I am a hard task master because if we have to get something done, we have to push to get it done,” he pointed out.

According to the LiMA Commissioner and CEO, the Liberia maritime program is a national pride. However, the stiff competition is even getting stiffer every day. So, he stressed that there is a need to work even harder.

For the good of the institution, he encouraged the staff to lookout for one another.
